Free Knitting Pattern – Fall Harvest Beanie

Fall is my favourite time of year. Cool crisp mornings, warm days, and amazing colours everywhere. Also, fall marks the beginning of hat season.

Affiliate Statement: Hey Readers, the following post contains affiliate links.  I may receive a small commission if you click and purchase from one of these links (which honestly, I’ll probably use to buy more yarn and design more awesome patterns to share with you).  I only recommend products that I already use and love, thank you so much for your support.

The inspiration for this beanie started with this warm yellow wool yarn.  The colour is Golden Heather in Cascade 220 highland wool.  I love earthy yellows and this one is so gorgeous. It has a slight green undertone with very subtle reds mixed in with the variegated tones.  When I first saw this yarn I knew it needed to be mixed with something that would make it POP.  This deep Eggplant purple, also from Cascade, was the perfect contrast and a simple fair isle pattern would create an awesome transition between colours.  A long rim to keep ears warm and a fun pompom on top finished the design.

Luckily, I found this awesome purple faux fur pompom in my stash.  I think I ordered it off amazon a couple years ago as part of a pack with other fun colours, that I never used, I almost always end up going with a natural tone.  This match was meant to be, I didn’t want to bring in any other colours that would take away from this awesome combination.

If you don’t have the perfect pompom sitting in your stash you can make your own wool yarn pompom with the contrast colour.  See my post on how to make a big fluffy pompom here, or go pompom-less, this beanie also looks beautiful without the topper.

These colours together give out a warm fall vibe and will be awesome for all of your autumn outings and adventures like hikes in the woods or trips to the pumpkin patch, corn maze or sunflower farm.

Of course, this beanie will look great in so many other combinations.  Go through your stash to look for an awesome contrasting duo in worsted weight wool.  I would love to see what you pick, share your project on Ravelry or post a photo on Instagram and tag me @handknithugs #fallharvestbeanie

The Pattern

Designer notes

Fair Isle method is used for colour work.  I have increased the needle size when knitting the fair isle rounds to avoid tightness.  If you find your work is still too tight you can increase to a US 9 (5.5 mm) needle. The fair isle rounds are written out, it is a simple repeat. Please comment at the bottom of this post if you prefer charts and I will make one to add to the pattern. Also, let me know if you have any questions, feedback or corrections. Thanks so much
