Free Knitting Pattern
I’m calling this one the Simple Summer Slouch Beanie but I’m sure I’ll still be wearing it in the fall and spring. It is light weight, super soft and cozy. Don’t let the bulky ‘weight’ of this yarn fool you, it will still knit up quickly on US 10 (6 mm) needles like other bulky beanies but this yarn is so light and lofty with a fluffy cloud softness. Perfect for cool summer evenings on the beach or early morning walks.

I had been eyeing Knit Picks Wonderfluff (affiliate link – see statement above) yarn for a while and I finally bought myself a ball back in the fall with another order. It is a mix of baby alpaca, merino wool and nylon. I grabbed it in the light neutral taupe shade Hare Heather because I wasn’t sure what I was going to make.
When the yarn arrived I was in love with how light and soft and fluffy it was, but it was the fall, I was super busy with other projects and holiday knitting orders. The Wonderfluff got tucked away into my stash and stayed in the back of my mind waiting for the perfect time and the perfect pattern (you do this too, right?). This week I pulled it out and decided it would be awesome for a light weight summer beanie.
This pattern is an easy knit, great for beginners just learning to knit in the round, or for novices looking for a quick evening project while you binge your new favourite show (I get you). The size is adult/one size, but will also look cute on slightly smaller heads. It has a wide circumference with a quick decrease on the crown for that trendy, slouchy look. If you need a little extra warmth for your ears it is long enough to fold the brim and wear it without the slouch. For a larger size there is enough yarn in one ball to add a couple extra rows.

Thanks so much, I hope you’ve enjoyed this pattern and are loving your new hat. Let me know what you think, share your project pics on Ravelry and Instagram @handknithugs with #summerslouchbeanie. I am definitely ordering more Wonderfluff so I can knit this one up in different colours. A fall beanie in the Goji Heather would be awesome. I’ll post the pics when I have them. Happy Knitting!

Looking for a heavier, soft and cozy slouchy beanie with an excellent drape? Try the Simple Bulky Slouch Beanie. It is very similar to the Summer Slouch but with a superwash bulky merino wool that is a little thicker and knits up with fewer rounds. Awesome if you’re looking for the same style but with a little extra warmth.
Does the 16″ refer to “point to point”? Or just the cord?
I’m a novice with circular needles!
Thanks, Pam
Hey Pam! 16″ is point to point, you’ll use this length a lot for hats and beanies. This is an awesome pattern for a novice, switch to double point needles when you get a few rows into the decrease rounds. I switch at 48 stitches but you can do it sooner if the stitches are getting tight – Heather
